Molluscum contagiosum is a contagious viral skin infection that causes small, smooth, dome-shaped bumps, often with a tiny central depression. It is especially common in children, but adults can also develop it. In otherwise healthy people it is usually harmless, although the lesions can spread, become irritated or persist for many months.

How molluscum spreads

The virus can spread through direct skin-to-skin contact, shared towels or other contaminated objects, and by scratching or shaving over lesions and transferring the virus to nearby skin. Children with eczema can develop larger numbers of lesions because scratching disrupts the skin barrier.

What molluscum looks like

• Small firm flesh-coloured, pink or white bumps

• A central dimple or depression

• Clusters on the trunk, arms, behind the knees, armpits or groin in children

• Itching or surrounding eczema in some people

• Redness and inflammation as lesions begin to resolve

Diagnosis is usually clinical, but widespread or unusual lesions, lesions near the eyes, genital lesions in adults, recurrent secondary infection or molluscum in an immunocompromised person should be medically assessed.

Published research

A published case series of 30 consecutive patients reported full resolution in 15 and improvement in 12 after homeopathic treatment. Because this was a case series without a randomized control group, it cannot establish efficacy. PubMed PMID: 12422930; DOI: 10.1054/homp.2002.0057. A later Cochrane review also identified a small placebo-controlled study of Calcarea carbonica; the estimate favoured homeopathy but was not statistically conclusive because the trial was very small.

How long can molluscum last?

Molluscum often clears spontaneously, but the process can take months. The number of lesions, scratching, eczema and immune status can affect the course. Follow-up focuses on whether new lesions are still appearing and whether existing lesions are resolving.
